The O/S Sailor / Ordinary Seaman performs maintenance and conservation of the vessel’s decks and superstructures and assists with general deck operations. The role supports safe and efficient ship operations, adheres to shipboard safety, environmental, and quality policies, and may work in various locations around the ship. The individual should be ready to take direction from the Bosun and to operate independently when required, while mentoring less experienced crew as appropriate. Work environment: Shipboard work in various locations around the vessel; exposure to weather, noise, and mechanical operations; use of PPE as required. Strength and stamina: Regularly required to lift and move up to 50 pounds; able to work in confined spaces and on ladders; tolerate hot/cold environments and ship movement. Physical tasks: The role requires standing, walking, handling, reaching with arms, talking, and hearing. Vision requirements include near and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to read and write English to understand and interpret written procedures and effectively present information. Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly, and cordially with guests and crew. Safe working mindset, good communication, teamwork, reliability, and the ability to work under supervision and follow procedures. Ability to apply customer service skills when interacting with guests and co-workers. STCW II/4: Navigational watchkeeping (deck watchkeeping) competency is essential; candidate must hold a current certificate/endorsement confirming navigational watchkeeping proficiency as required by the Flag State. Current STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) and maintain up-to-date on any mandatory shipboard safety qualifications. 3 years of previous experience as a Sailor or in a deck-related role. Assist deck officers as needed to support shipboard operations and guest service activities. Be familiar with and follow the company’s Safety and Quality Management System (SQM) and the Emergency Plan and Station Bill; comply with environmental policies and report any non-compliance. Perform other duties as assigned; may be required to undertake additional deck-related tasks as directed by supervision. Observe operations and offer suggestions to the Bosun for potential improvements in shipboard procedures. Participate in training and guide less experienced deck crewmembers to improve deck operations. Attend meetings, training sessions, and other required work-related activities on board. Report safety or policy concerns to supervision; monitor environmental systems and report malfunctions immediately. Follow safety procedures; wear appropriate PPE; comply with daily safety instructions from the Bosun. Keep deck spaces clean, safe, and organized; ensure tools and equipment are stored properly after use. Participate in planned and unplanned deck maintenance; assist with routine inspections and equipment servicing. Perform cleaning, washing, painting, and surface-prep tasks in deck spaces and on superstructures as directed by the Bosun or supervisors. | |
